Joyce Allen
Joyce Allen is our Head Coach at Sunrise Rollerland. She is an Advanced Certified Coach with USA Roller Sports and has been with us here since 1981. She runs our competitive club as well as our large Invitational Skating meet over the Memorial Day weekend.
Joyce has been involved in Roller Skating as an amateur, judge and coach. She received her Gold Medal in Dance Skating in 1966. She started coaching in 1969 and has coached at all levels from beginners to World Team members. She has coached hundreds of Regional and National champions in her career. She has had skaters qualify for the National Championships every year since 1972. Joyce is an active member of the SRSTA (Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America) and was named the 2004 SRSTA Teacher of the Year. Roller Skating has been a big part of her life. She enjoys coaching and thinks that it is a sport for all ages. This is a family sport and she believes this is a great way to have fun! |
Kayla Chekon
Kayla Chekon had skates on her feet as soon as she could walk. Kayla has spent the majority her skating career with Sunrise Rollerland Head Pro, Joyce Allen. She has spent time over the past twenty years representing Sunrise Rollerland as a skater and now as a member of our coaching staff.
In 1997 Kayla attended the National Championship for the first time as a Solo Dance skater and holds a national title in Team Dance with her husband James Chekon. In addition, she has placed multiple times at the national level in Figures. Kayla is an active member of USA Roller Sports and the RSA as a skater, coach, and judge. Roller skating has always been a part of Kayla’s life, as she grew up around the rink with her mother’s own competitive skating career. Throughout this time, Kayla has developed a strong love for the sport and believes that it has provided a positive, healthy outlet for many over the years. Kayla enjoys coaching all ages and skill levels in each discipline. |
JAmes Chekon
James Chekon began skating while attending a friends birthday party and was instantly hooked! He stumbled and teetered his way through the party and afterwards vowed that he would become a proficient roller skater. Little did he know more than twenty years later he would be teaching roller skating!
After advancing through the Saturday morning class program, James entered his first skating competition at the age of 7 and competed for several years before skating his first National Championships in 1994. In each year following, James went on to place at the Regional Championships in figures and loops every year after with eight National placements as well, including two in team dance. At the 2008 National Champions James won a National title with his wife, Kayla Chekon. James also holds gold bars in Figures and Loops. James began coaching in 2009 and have had skaters place in competition at the local, regional, and national level. James is a certified AC2 Skating Instructor through USA Roller Sports, and a member in good standing with SRSTA and SRSTC. James loves skating and being able to coach skaters of all ages and abilities to success at various levels. |
Linda Pricer
Linda began her love for skating in 1974. She skated out of different skating clubs in the Bay Area. Roller Skating has been a big part of her life. She enjoys coaching students of all ages and disciplines. This includes Freeskating, Dance, Figures and Creative Dance. She not only coaches the traditional Quad skating, but has coached skaters in Inline skating.
In 1991, Linda started her coaching career. Since then, she has assisted many of her skaters to go on to Regional and National placements. Linda has been certified by the USA Roller Sports Association as a Coach. She has a love for the Gold Skate Classic contest were she demonstrates her advance skills in the art of composing, planning and arranging the movements, steps, and patterns of individual skaters and group numbers. She is currently a member in good standing with USA Roller Sports (USARS), Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America (SRSTA) and Society of Roller Skating Teachers of California (SRSTC). Skating for Linda has always been part of her live. Her dad skated at Play Land at The Beach in San Francisco, back in the 60’s. He skated in pairs and fours. Her daughter, Brittany, has Regional placements and National Championship placements. In 2009 and 2010, Brittany was a member of the USA World team, where she competed in Germany (2009) and Portugal (2010). Her daughter, Tiffany also has numerous Regional and National Placements and is a member of the California Army National Guard. Tiffany was one of the first inline skaters to ever compete in that style of skating. |
